About Bootmakers

BOOTMAKERS is a design workshop and child-friendly café, offering a variety of hands-on creative activities for adults and children, using many recycled and upcycled materials.

Our activities are designed to make phones a little easier to put down.

Bootmakers offers:

To visit Bootmakers you can book on to one of our regular workshops, or simply drop-in at any time to complete one of our BootBox™ creative kits. Our team of helpers will greet you, take orders for refreshments and supply the tools, tips, and techniques to ensure an awesome outcome to your visit. Kits are designed for adults and for children aged five and over. Younger children are welcome at our messy play table, at a minimal charge.

Our messy play table is suitable for children as young as 12-18 months, depending on how happy they are to be seated.

Our creative kits, or BootBoxes™, cost between £4.50 and £9.50, depending on their complexity and their target age group. BootBox™ sessions last for a maximum of two hours. Messy play costs £2.50, (£2 for concessions) a session, with sessions lasting a maximum of one hour. To stay longer, simply pay for another hour!

Our bookable workshops cost between £8 and £25, depending on their length and activity, and our one-off days and community-based events are individually priced.

Workshops

Our bookable workshops are at least two hours long, and held in small groups. You can book by phone, in person, or via email. Workshops are relaxed, stress-free and fun, designed for adults, children of all ages, teens and families.

Our one-off days and community events are aimed at all sections of the community and offer children and adults stress-free family time, as well as bringing guests of all ages together to be creative and to have fun.

There are no scheduled workshops or events at the moment

Scrap Donations

Bootmakers relies on donations of scrap materials. Put your old scrap to good use by donating it!

Much of the content of your BootBox™ might have otherwise been destined for the bin. But that’s not to say that we are offering you any old rubbish. Here at Bootmakers, we collect and reuse scrap because we believe that it still has a value. We strongly believe in transforming everyday surplus or scrap materials into new creations, which are characterful and desirable. Instead of using conventional energy to simply recycle these materials, we are hoping that you’ll use your energy and creativity to grant these materials a new lease of life.

We are almost always happy to take:

  • Wool/yarn
  • Nespresso capsules
  • Metal bottle caps
  • Buttons
  • Material
  • String
  • Beads
  • Jewellery
  • Leather Scraps
  • Wrapping paper
  • Wallpaper
  • Old woollens
  • Glitter
  • Nail polish
  • Paint
  • Wax crayons
  • Toy animals
  • Bubble wrap
  • Rope
  • Ribbon
  • Cookie cutters
  • Moulds (all sorts)
  • Greetings cards
  • Paint swatches

Please make sure all items are clean, safe and personally delivered. Please do not leave items on our doorstep, as they could cause an obstruction or trip hazard.

BootBoxes™

Our BootBoxes™:

  • Contain all you need to create something unique and incredible.
  • Are designed for adults and for children over the age of five.
  • Rely heavily on community-donated scrap materials, which we’ve paired with fun, attractive embellishments, to offer stylish, creative activities.
  • Leave plenty of scope for individual expression and choice.
  • Are designed to be completed during our two-hour drop-in sessions.
  • Make making fun, less expensive and less frustrating

Our selection of BootBoxes™ changes regularly, depending on the materials we have at our disposal. We can’t guarantee that a specific kit will be available when you come to visit us, as they are offered on a first come, first serve basis. However, we aim to have a selection of kits available for all ages and all abilities, at all times.

We design our activities around the scrap that we have at hand, in order to guarantee affordable, inspiring, and above all, non mainstream creations. As well as sorting and preparing this scrap we add all sorts of exciting extras to help you complete a unique, remarkable and wonderful creation.

Access

Bootmakers is committed to improving accessibility for all of our customers

Buggies

We have very limited space for prams and buggys. If you are at all able to leave them at home, we would be extremely grateful. If you need to bring a pushchair, we may have to ask you to fold it at busy times. That said, please never let the buggy stand in your way of coming to see us. If it’s your only option, we’ll find room for it!

Customers with limited mobility

Our building is wheelchair accessible and we welcome customers with limited mobility.

Sadly, due to the age of the building, we do not have wheelchair access to the bathroom. However, our bathroom does have grab rails, and a high level toilet, suited to customers with limited mobility.

Baby changing

We have full baby changing facilities.

Community

Volunteering

We strongly believe in the use of volunteers, in skill sharing, and in the exchange of ideas and expertise. If you would like to volunteer to spend time in our workshop, please get in touch.

Older Community

We are very aware of the invaluable role played by grandparents and will do all we can to support those bringing their grandchildren to our workshop.

We also offer activities for all ages, including the over 60s, with concessions for senior citizens available at non-peak times. Please see our timetable here.

We are keenly aware that we have moved from a make-do-and mend culture to a predominantly disposable culture. If you have any creative skills that you would like to volunteer, especially if these will help us in our mission to reduce waste, please do get in touch. We greatly value old-fashioned know-how.

Rewards

We have a number of incentives and rewards on offer, from free drinks and snacks for volunteers, to free entry for our repeat customers.

Recycling

Without scrap donations there would be no Bootmakers. We design our activities around embellished scrap in order to guarantee affordable, inspiring, and above all, non mainstream creations. You will find a list of the scrap we can always accept here. If in doubt, please get in touch.
